After the top 5-6 teams “battle” on February 12th, the top HES team will compete on February 18th via Zoom with the other top teams from Arboretum and Prairie elementary schools.
- Participants who signed up for this year’s 3rd and 4th grade WCSD BIG READ are sharing in discussions and activities on Seesaw around “The Wright 3” or “Mysterious Mansion” mysteries. Our culminating event for participants will be on Thursday, February 20th at the Waunakee Public Library.
- Grade K-1 students are enjoying reading the WI Golden Archer Book Award nominated books together in library class and will get to vote for their favorite later this month.
- Thank you to all families of K-2 families who were able to join us for the Fall and Winter Early Riser Reader Events. Our Spring Early Riser Reader K-2 family event is scheduled for Friday, April 4th from 7:00 - 7:30. Hope you can join us!
- February 27th Heritage Elementary will have the exciting opportunity of welcoming Author Sarah Warren to our school. She will present to each grade level, share her books, and inspire us to be heroes in our community.
- March 3rd - 7th is Read Across America Week when our school will celebrate literacy with reading events, dress up days, and the annual “March Madness” Tournament of Books. Look for more information in a few weeks.
Checking Out Books
Check-out is 1 time in the 6 day rotation. See the library class schedule below.
Books students are finished with are picked up 8am daily. Put completed books in the class' library bin in order to get new books on check-out day.
- Students in Kindergarten will be introduced to library procedures with 1 book in September, but can check out 2 books every library class for the rest of the school year.
- Students in 1st - 3rd grade check out 3 books every library class.
- Students in 4th grade check out 3 books every other library class*.
*Additional times will be shared with 3rd and 4th grade teachers when individuals can exchange completed books for new books.
The worst thing that can happen to a library book is that it doesn't get read. Check backpacks for library books and enjoy them together, then put completed books in the class' return bin so new books can be checked out on their next check-out day.
We do not charge overdue fines, however, reminder notices will be shared using Destiny's automated email system and print reminders will be sent periodically. Students in 3rd and 4th grades can also check what books they have out by logging into Destiny.

Resources
Students can access most of our school's resources through their Clever Login. Here are just some of the great ebooks, databases, and apps that students can use.
The catalog where you can search our library's collection. 3rd and 4th grade students can log into Destiny and see what books checked out under "My Info".
The Heritage Elementary library subscribes to an elementary-level collection of digital books, audiobooks, and magazines through the Wisconsin Schools Digital Library Consortium. Students can use their Google logins to log in to Sora, which is available as a website and as a mobile app, to read books from the collection. Students can have five books checked out at a time.
TumbleBooks includes "over 350 animated, talking picture books! The site also features books in Spanish and French, read-along chapter books, graphic novels, and non-fiction books, plus games and puzzles!" (tumblebooklibrary.com, 2022)

Sora
The Heritage Elementary library subscribes to an elementary-level collection of digital books, audiobooks, and magazines through the Wisconsin Schools Digital Library Consortium for our students in 3rd and 4th grade. Students may access the library through Sora, which is available as a website and as a mobile app.
How does it work?
Students log into Sora using their school Google accounts (the same account students use to log into their district Chromebooks). If students are using a mobile device, the Sora app is available for both ios and Android devices. Once the app is installed, the login process is the same as described in the document except that students must first choose “My school is Wisconsin Schools Digital Library Consortium” before selecting “Waunakee School District.” There is also an option to send Sora books to Kindles.
As WSDLC patrons, students may check out up to 5 books, and they may place holds on up to 5 books. Books are checked out for 14 days unless the student renews the book. If a student is logged into their account, Sora will hold their place in the book so that they can pick up their reading on any device.
Students may search for specific titles or authors, or they may browse subject areas or curated collections. Collections in the library include “always available” titles and seasonal selections. among many others.
Third and fourth-graders have been learning how to use Sora during library classes. Please let me know if you have any questions about how to access or to navigate the WSDLC digital collection at home. (If your family has used the Overdrive or Libby app through the public library, Sora will seem very similar.)
Sincerely, Erica Wagoner LMTC Director
